This performance invites the audience to move a shelf from one place to another with us, as a means to show love through cooperation and physical input. Or is there something more?
[Ashley] The purest form of loving is giving. It was the day of moving a second hand shelf bought from Carousel to my new home that I saw how pure that loving can be. It is the way they sacrificed a degree of physical comfort to actualize this act of giving that moved me. This performance is a reenactment of that evening and a chance to show reciprocity.
[Jing] When I think of unconditional love, that must be my parents, always. My dad is like a superhero, and he is my best supporting technician, the best craftsman and teacher. He always helps me out when I have trouble with exhibition installation, and he’s the best driver when I need to move anything. The idea of the performance reminds me that I know what LOVE feels like, and I know how to love. That comforts me a lot, and I already know how to respond to love in a relationship.
